Great article, Claudio. I think many app providers could benefit from the clarity of thinking you offer on the monetization strategy of LBS applications. There is still a lot of work to be done on the hyper-local ad side of the equation which means that we might be a ways away from truly realizing the vision. The local sports bar (in your example) doesn't seem to be buying ad inventory in the way that we would like him to just yet. Of course, I know that day will come -- and when it does, those who have executed the strategy well will certainly reap the rewards.

To the question of who is paying for the information (or ad), what do they want to pay for, and what will it take for users to give up this information?

It's one thing to know that someone walked into a market, but something(s) else to know what they bought, what alternatives they considered before they made a purchase decision, and when a purchase represents a shift in brand or product category behavior. What would make users willing to divulge such information, and what systems would be efficient enough to capture such information reliably?
